The Doctors
Ian Sangster (senior partner)
Ian brought five and a half years of general practice experience to Earby when he joined the team in 1998, having previously been a partner at a practice in Lossiemouth, Scotland. He is our nominated ‘senior partner', a title which is liked by the patients and required by the finance department of the PCT, but which does not mean that he needs to make all our decisions, preferring as we do to have a healthy debate about most issues and reach a consensus opinion. Clinically he takes the lead on diabetes. Ian is a GP registrar trainer, has involvement with medical student training, and takes a healthy interest in practice management.
Phil Huxley
Phil joined the practice in 1998 following completion of his GP training on the Airedale GP scheme. He is very much a Generalist GP but has taken the lead with patients experiencing problems with drug misuse. He also supports the Practice Nurses with Chronic Disease Management of Diabetes, Heart Disease and Blood Pressure. Phil has good links with the local Primary Care Trust (NHS East Lancashire) and takes a keen interest in how local services are commissioned and organised.
Esther Smith
Esther joined the practice in 2000. She trained and completed her VTS in Scotland , but always planned to work closer to her roots in Lancashire. Esther leads on women's health issues and teenage health, but remains interested in all aspects of general practice. She is keen to maintain an academic interest in general practice and uses the literature on a day-to-day basis to inform her practice. She is keen to teach and shares GP registrar training with Dr Sangster.
Michael Horsfield
Mike joined the surgery in 2001 as a registrar and returned to the partnership in 2003. He qualified in Newcastle in 1996 and spent time working in medicine in the north-east hospitals before moving back to Yorkshire at St. James's in Leeds. His interests lie in respiratory medicine, ophthalmology, musculoskeletal and sports medicine. He is the practice lead in child protection and IT, and is the trainer for the foundation doctors. He also plays in a local Brass Band and is involved in coaching at the triathlon club in Skipton.
Jo Huxley
Jo qualified in 1991 and initially trained in Medicine for the Elderly. She completed her GP training on the Airedale GP scheme in 1998. She joined the team at Earby in 2006, having worked in Bingley and Keighley. She maintains an interest in Elderly Care and Dementia. She is married to “the other Dr Huxley” and does not mind being referred to as Dr or Mrs Huxley or even Dr Jo!
The Nursing Team
Sheena Ellison
Sheena joined the practice in 2002 having been a practice nurse for 10 years at another surgery. Sheena leads on chronic disease management, particularly diabetes and ischaemic heart disease. She shares responsibility for cervical cytology screening. She supports the more junior members of the nursing team.
Tracey Bentley
Tracey moved into primary care in 2002 having spent 14 years on the ward of a busy gynaecology unit. She is developing her role in health promotion, presently training to undertake cervical cytology smear tests. She has experience in wound management, and works with Sheena to run the baby immunisation programme.
Julie Parker
Julie joined the practice in November 2001, after working at Pendle Community Hospital for 3 years gaining NVQ level 3 in 12 units of patient care / venepuncture. Julie runs our busy blood clinic. She also does ECGs and BP checks, and assists during minor surgery.
The Admin team
Pat Chippendale Practice / business manager
Pat has worked at the surgery for 25 years and runs the business side of the practice. Her role has changed many times over the years with all the different changes made within the NHS. She deals with any new guidelines from the primary care trust or the department of health. Pat is involved with the PCT as practice manager representative on various sub groups.
Carolyn Taylor
Carolyn has recently reduced her hours. She carries out all reception duties and is the links co-ordinator for Lancashire & North Yorkshire health authorities for new patient registrations.
Kath Cardwell - Secretary
Kath is semi-retired and works two days. She does all the surgery referrals and general secretarial duties.
Linda Poole Receptionist
Linda has worked at the surgery for 5 years as a part-time receptionist and carries out all general reception duties.
Sharon Hampshire
Sharon carries out general reception duties and medication queries. She is also the co-ordinator for local nursing homes for prescribing.
Tracy Wilkinson Office Manager + Team Leader
Tracy assists the practice manager with the appointments system, and updating protocols for the administration team. She is also the medical reports officer. She monitors all reports from solicitors, insurance companies and other requests for medicals and reports. She is the point of contact if the Practice manager is not available.
Margaret Higgins
Margaret does general reception duties and also job share the medical secretary duties with Kath. She also co-ordinates the palliative care register along with the Macmillan nurses.
Kelly Sunter
Kelly carries out general reception duties at the main desk and taking phone call, she also looks after the notes administration and practice records of deceased patients.
Sharon Madill
Sharon joined the admin team in 2009 and carries out general reception duties.
